DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACY PRACTICE

The mission of the department is to provide quality teaching-learning enviornment that will prepare the students for entry into all areas of professional pharmacy practice. The department intends to promote research and service, demonstrating excellence in professional practice and outreach. Currently, the emphasis is placed on principles of pharmacotherapy and practice management for the purpose of advancing quality cost-effective pharmaceutical care.

The Department of Pharmacy Practice is committed to the:

  • Development of long-term functional practice skills in students, and others in the professional practice.
  • Development and practice of systematic approach to identify and solve drug-related problems.
  • Implementation of Good Pharmacy Practice Points for Clinical Pharmacists and for Clinical Pharmacy educators.
  • Research leadership in desired areas of excellence and development of interdisciplinary research programs within the institute and other institutes of pharmaceutical sciences in the country and abroad.
  • Leadership in national, state and local professional associations and a strong role in developing future practice standards and models.
  • Providing of highest level of pharmaceutical service to our nation.

Key features of the department:

  • The experience and knowledge of the faculty of the Department of Pharmacy Practice enable professional degree students to receive excellent didactic and experiential training necessary to become well-rounded practitioners.
  • The professional curriculum includes-new general, scientific, and patient-centered content that prepares Master of Pharmacy graduates to deliver effective and cost-efficient pharmaceutical care.
  • The department is well equipped with sophisticated equipment and rapid access internet facilities. It has a well-stacked Library too.
  • The College has MoUs with three multi-specialty hospitals in the city including Kaveri Medical Center Hospital, KMC Speciality Hospital, and Maruthi Hospital wherein modern equipment and facilities are available and all major, advanced, invasive, and non-invasive treatment procedures are carried out.
  • Facilities like Drug Information Center and Clinical research activities including patient medication counseling are available for providing the best knowledge regarding healthcare in community pharmacy.
  • The department releases a quarterly 'Periyar Drug Information Centre (PDIC) Newsletter' that gives news about the latest advancements in the field of medicine and therapy.
  • The department is involved in various research activities like ADR monitoring, Drug utilization, Pharmacoeconomics, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, and Drug-Drug interaction studies.
  • The faculties and PG students are constantly encouraged to present and publish papers of their research outcomes that have resulted in 68 paper presentations and publications.
  • The AICTE has awarded the Department with grants under various schemes like MODROBS, SDP, RPS, etc.
  • The department has been awarded by the AICTE, New Delhi with an 'RPS' scheme grant of Rs. 10 lakhs during the years 2009 - 2012.
  • The department secures more number of Distinctions in B.Pharm University examinations and a 100% result is always maintained in M.Pharm examinations.
  • The department has started a new unit of Periyar Drug Information & Patient Counselling Center at the KMC Specialty Hospitals Ltd., Trichy.

The department intends to grow into the following areas and looks forward to collaborate with external agencies:

  • Research into drug-related healthcare issues.
  • Identifying, monitoring and solving drug-related problems.
  • Establishment of clinical pharmacy services in super-specialty hospitals.
  • Drug utilization reviews and cost containment issues in hospital pharmacy.
  • Setting up of Patient counseling facilities in hospitals.
  • Offering Continuing Professional Education (CPE) programs for all sections of the profession.
